5 on Your Side: Veteran let down by handyman service
When you move to a new area, and you need home renovations, it can be hard to find a good handyman.
A veteran who has a disability moved to the Valley four months ago went on the Nextdoor app looking for neighbors to give a good referral for a handyman, but instead she got a nightmare.
Tenna Morris moved from New Jersey to Harlingen four months ago, and wanted to upgrade her new home by closing off her backyard porch with window screens and wood panels.
She found Izzy's card on Nextdoor and saw pictures of a remodeled patio job that he had posted online, and figured he would be right for the job.
"I reached out, and asked for him to give me an estimate on a screened in porch," Morris said.
Morris bought $900 worth of materials.
"It was $1,200 for labor only, and then I asked him to fix the leak in the roof, and when I paid him finally, he said that was an extra $200 to fix the leak," Morris said.
After two days, the job was completed, but it didn't take long for the roof to start leaking again.
"The leak was coming in so bad," Morris said. "So I reached out to him, and he said 'several days' — I reached out to him, and he finally said 'I'll be out' and he never showed up, he blocked me on the text."
That was not the only issue Morris encountered with Izzy.
Morris says after days of recent rain, the newly installed wood panel door started siding.
"Everything was not secured," Morris said.
Morris reached out to 5 on Your Side for help.
