Channel 5 News spoke with leaders from the nonprofit LUPE; they worked with Huerta for many years and reflected on her life.

Huerta helped transform the farm worker movement and fought for workers' rights, equal pay, and better working conditions. Chavez Camacho said Huerta was a passionate organizer who connected with people and inspired young Latinas to follow in her footsteps.

“No matter how high she was in recognition and no matter how high she was in being known, she never forgot where she came from, she never forgot that she was in community, and she never forgot that she needed to do this with the people,” Chavez Camacho said.

Chavez Camacho said Huerta also believed in the power of civic engagement and encouraged people to vote and make their voices heard. Chavez Camacho said continuing that work is one way the community can honor Huerta's legacy.

LUPE says Huerta's legacy will continue to inspire new generations to organize, speak up, and fight for their communities.
