UTRGV men's basketball focusing on leadership as end to summer workouts draws near
The UTRGV men's basketball team took to the podium again on Thursday afternoon to discuss their progress during summer workouts.
Vaqueros head coach Brandon Chambers stressed the team's focus on leadership throughout his press conference, emphasizing that the responsibility falls on each player to do what they can to lead.
"In the leadership program that we've been doing, all 15 are leaders," Chambers said. "Yesterday, [we went over] servant leadership and the big thing was role or title doesn't dictate your impact."
Chambers followed that up by praising Valley native Luis Ramirez for what he's brought to the team this summer.
"Luis Ramirez is a walk-on for us, he was a carry-over from last year," Chambers said. "Luis is one of the best leaders we have on the team. He is an absolute monster. Biggest energy guy moist appreciated. He's gonna come in, he's gonna be the best teammate, he's gonna cheer for you guys, he's gonna have energy... He's gonna be all about, how do I serve these other guys."
Chambers answered questions on where he feels things are in terms of getting a better idea of what his rotation will look like once the regular season comes around.
"It's a great question because the staff asks me that all the time. Not even just specifically that. Shot selection, roles, when you have a new team, there's a feeling out process at first," he said. "Right now and I've told this to the guys, I want them to just play and really enjoy being on the floor with each other... As we get moving towards the fall and towards the season, I'll start to really dial those things down."
The schedule has yet to be released for the Vaqueros men's basketball team, so the exact date the season will open is currently unknown. Last year, the season started on November 3rd.
