Over 100 people packed the hallways of the Texas Comptroller’s Audit Office in McAllen to see if the state was holding on to money that belonged to them.

As previously reported, the state comptroller’s office said they’re holding on to more than $10 billion in unclaimed money, with $125 million belonging to people in Cameron and Hidalgo counties.

A Thursday event invited the public to see if they had any money to claim.

Esther Mata De La Garza said she didn’t find money with her name on it, but she did find money that belonged to her family.

“What matters is that one of us got blessed, and that’s what’s important,” De La Garza said.

De La Garza drove from Alton to help her sister and brother-in-law check their names and claim over $500, making new friends along the way to the office.

“We’re getting to meet a lot of people here, so it's fun,” De La Garza said.

At noon, Diana Diaz with the Texas Comptroller's Office said $20,000 had been claimed.

Among those in attendance was Jay Villarreal, who said he found thousands of dollars his late father had left for him over a decade ago.

“It’s a small lotto,” Villarreal said. He called the mini-windfall a piece of his father’s legacy.

“It’s not so much the money, it’s the meaning behind it, my kids actually got to get something from their grandfather,” Villarreal said.

Those wanting to check if they have unclaimed money can do so at the Texas Unclaimed Property website and search the database by putting their name and address.
