Starr County, TX (KRGV) — Set in Stone is restoring headstones for six Starr County families for free ahead of Día de los Muertos.

For Rio Grande City resident Lisa Barrera's family in Rio Grande City, the work gave her parents' headstone a fresh look after nearly 10 years. The business cleaned the headstone and added new engravings for free.

"We bring flowers and we come and spend most of the morning. We'll have coffee and sit here and just spend time with them in the morning and then at lunchtime, we'll go home and have a little meal or something for the family," Barrera said.

Set in Stone owner Maria Yvette Hernandez said she wanted to give back to the community ahead of Día de los Muertos.

She put out a call for the free service on social media after noticing memorials that needed a little extra care.

"We noticed there was a headstone that had a sticker on it and it was crooked and it was like somebody had just put it there to just finalize the headstone," Hernandez said.

The Barrera family was one of the six families selected for the service. Barrera says the help eases the financial burden of updating a memorial.

"You know that it's anywhere between $400 to $500 just for the date," Barrera said.

Hernandez and her team completed all six restorations in just two days and helped families in Rio Grande City and La Grulla prepare for the holiday. She hopes to make the initiative an annual tradition.

For Barrera, the restoration means her family can continue its tradition with a new sense of peace.

"We feel complete. We feel like there's nothing missing here. Just she's complete. She's in her final resting space and it's already complete," Barrera said.
