Those driving on Highway 107 toward San Carlos near Edinburg will run into cement barriers and barricades. It's part of a road improvement project in the area that’s running years behind schedule.

The Texas Department of Transportation started to widen the highway from U.S. 281 to FM 493 in La Blanca in 2019.

The project was expected to wrap up in 2024, but work on a portion of the highway caused a delay.

Businesses along Highway 107 in San Carlos said they've been losing customers because of the delay.

According to TxDOT spokesman Ray Pedraza, a redesign of the highway between North Alamo and Sharp roads caused a delay.

“Construction activity started again in December,” Pedraza said.

TxDOT said they had to wait on utilities to be relocated and plan a redesign. The project is now expected to continue through January 2027.

Frustrated drivers have driven around barricades to bypass traffic delays.

“We ask the public to please not move the barricades or drive around them, it is illegal and it is dangerous,” Pedraza said.

TxDOT said violators could be fined and even jailed for moving or driving around barricades. The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office said they've increased patrols in the area.
