Roma, TX (KRGV) — The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating a shooting that happened on Sept. 26, 2026 near Garceño, and the investigation remains underway.

More than 1,000 military personnel from the U.S. and Mexico are now stationed at the border. Channel 5 News spotted National Guard troops from Mexico stationed under the Roma-Miguel Aleman International Bridge.

The Joint Task Force-Southern Command announced earlier this month that hundreds of U.S. service members were heading to the border to strengthen border security.

Mexico security expert David Saucedo said what is new is the U.S. took the Coast Guard incident and then reacted by sending troops to the border.

Roma Mayor Jaime Escobar said he welcomes the military personnel in the city and believes the presence is needed, especially along the Mexican highway leading to Roma.

“If they see military presence, don’t become alarmed,” Escobar said. “As long as there isn’t abuse or any type of intimidation in any way, military presence is something positive.”

Roma business owner Iris Ojeda said she does not think the added presence is necessary.

“But we do appreciate that they're taking care of us,” Ojeda said.
