Mercedes ISD seeking donations for local senior home
Socks, crossword puzzles, blankets and dolls are among the items at the donation boxes stationed across Mercedes ISD campuses.
Mercedes ISD Counselor Kasie Sauceda and a group of 20 students are collecting the items to spread a little holiday joy in their community for the young at heart.
The group plans to surprise 100 seniors at Mid-Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Mercedes with donated presents that will be distributed to them on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
“A lot of our elderly sometimes in these facilities don't have family,” Sauceda said.
The goal is for every senior to get two gifts.
“It's priceless seeing the switch in them, seeing them give back to the community,” Sauceda said.
But this year, donations have been slow.
“It fell short this year. We are still very blessed to have one gift per resident but don't lose hope that we can still get more,” Sauceda said.
Mercedes ISD senior Mikayla Anciso has already pitched in and is calling on the community to help fill in the gaps.
“I went to go buy gifts right away. I bought blankets, beanies and socks,” Anciso said.
Anciso said this will be her fourth year volunteering, and she keeps helping because of the impact a simple gift and visit can make.
Those hoping to donate items can drop them off at the Mercedes ISD Administration Office, located at 801 Hidalgo Street.
