A standing ovation was held Wednesday at the first meeting of the newly-appointed La Joya ISD school board of managers.

Seven members of the community spoke during public comment — all of them supporting and welcoming the new board of managers.

The members replaced the previous board last week after a yearlong Texas Education Agency investigation found evidence of corruption within the board.

One major item passed by the managers was a vote to request a TEA-appointed conservator to manage the board.

The board also voted to hire a new law firm for the district, and to waive a requirement that newly appointed La Joya ISD superintendent Dr. Marcey Sorensen get a superintendent certification.

Channel 5 News attempted to interview the board and superintendent after the meeting, but were told they would not be commenting.

The new board president said that waiver for Dr. Sorensen's certification could last up to three years, but she is required to obtain it before the waiver ends.
