The Texas Education Agency on Thursday announced the appointment of a board of managers and a new superintendent for the La Joya Independent School District.

Brenda Salinas, president of the district’s teacher’s union, said she’s one of many district employees who have long asked for the state to intervene.

Salinas says she trusts the new members hired by the state.

“It was frustrating, it was stressful… but finally today we got, we received great news,” Salinas said.

The decision came after a TEA investigation found evidence of corruption within the school board.

“It's not going to be easy, but they're going to do what is best for our district because they were appointed for a reason,” Salinas said.

Dr. Marcey Sorensen was appointed as the new superintendent.

Sorensen says she wants to engage with everyone, even those against the decision

Gema Guajardo has a daughter at La Joya High School, and said she didn't trust the previous board.

“They haven't done good things for the school,” Guajardo said, adding that she wants the new board to make positive changes for students.

The new members started Thursday.

Outgoing district superintendent Beto Gonzalez was hired in September 2023. His contract guarantees him severance pay in case of a TEA takeover, meaning he'll keep getting paid for six months.
