The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office said charges could be filed after a woman died while in custody in October.

Jacqueline Barocio was in custody at the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center when she was found dead on Oct. 21, according to previous reports.

A Wednesday news release from the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office said toxicology reports revealed Barocio “had fentanyl in her system at the time of death.”

“A new law went into effect that was passed in the last legislative session that made it murder to intentionally give someone fentanyl — and it results in their death,” Cameron County Assistant District Attorney Edward Sandoval said. “If there's a crime that's occurred, we're going to make sure that we seek justice for the people that are hurt and the laws that are broken.”

Barocio’s family previously said she was jailed on aggravated assault and drug possession charges.

Channel 5 News and its sister station, Noticias RGV, asked how the fentanyl could have made into the jail. Officials declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
