Starr County Rep. Henry Cuellar announced the launch of a border security task force.

The 26 members of the Democrats for Border Security Task Force is advocating for the bipartisan legislation that died after Donald Trump turned on the package.

Cuellar announced the task force in a Tuesday morning press conference.

“Republicans have been calling for securing the border, securing the border. Finally, there's a strong border deal done and they don't want to bring it up for a vote itself,” Cuellar said.

The bipartisan border security bill would set aside billions for border security.

Nearly $650 million would be set aside for new border barriers, and another $400 million would go to hiring more border Patrol agents and immigration judges.

The bill would also give the president the authority to shut down parts of the border if migrant crossings get too high in certain areas.

The U.S. House of Representatives has refused to take up the bill because it also calls for more funding overseas.

The task force was launched the same day the House passed a resolution authored by Valley congresswoman Monica De La Cruz that “denounces the Biden administration's immigration policies,”  according to a news release.

"The current state of our nation's border security is unsustainable. The policies put forth by the Biden administration have resulted in the worst border security crisis in our nation's history, endangering our communities and straining our resources,” De La Cruz said in a statement. “The resolution underscores the urgent need for the Biden administration to take decisive action to address the crisis at our border. We urge the administration to immediately begin utilizing the authorities available to them to regain control of the situation and protect the interests of the American people."
