Edinburg, TX (KRGV) — A 25-year-old Edinburg man was found dead Thursday and a police officer was hospitalized after he was struck numerous times by the suspect in an officer-involved shooting, according to the Edinburg Police Department.
The unidentified 40-year-old officer is a four-year veteran of the department, according to Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala.
“He is in need of prayer; he was struck numerous times,” Ayala said during a press conference.
A city spokesperson said on Thursday afternoon the officer was in critical but stable condition. On Friday morning, police said the officer was now in stable condition.
According to Ayala, the officer was responding to a domestic disturbance report in the 200 block of Fig Drive at around 9:10 a.m. after two unidentified women said their brother, identified as Daby Tadeo Ledezma, was “acting erratically.”

Ledezma lived with his sisters, police said.
As the officer approached the residence, he was met with gunfire and was struck numerous times and went down, Ayala said.
Other responding officers also took gunfire but were able to drag the injured officer to cover and begin medical treatment.
According to Ayala, the suspect used a pistol and an assault rifle in the shooting.
After a “period of active gunfire,” officers were able to secure the area and found the suspect dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Ayala said.
At the press conference, Ayala said the suspect has an outstanding probation violation warrant out of north of San Antonio.
Ayala said the sisters and other witnesses are being interviewed and thanked the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in responding to the scene.
The Texas Rangers will investigate the shooting while the Edinburg Police Department’s internal affairs division will conduct an internal review of the incident, Ayala said.
