Former UTRGV wide receiver Tony Diaz announced his commitment to Iowa on social media on Friday evening.

Diaz entered the transfer portal in early December after emerging as a star for the Vaqueros. He totaled 875 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns as a freshman, earning himself the title of Southland Conference Freshman of the Year in addition to numerous other accolades.

Diaz joins an Iowa program that is headed up by Kirk Ferentz, the longest-tenured college football coach for any FBS program. The Hawkeyes finished the regular season ranked 23rd in the country and defeated Vanderbilt in the ReliaQuest Bowl. The program has finished with at least eight wins in 10 of the last 11 seasons.

Diaz's commitment comes during the same week that UTRGV lost two other stars on offense in the transfer portal. The team's other top receiver from last season, Xayvion Noland, committed to Oregon State while their starting tight end, Ismael Smith Flores, announced his commitment to East Carolina. Those three players were the Vaqueros' top three in receiving touchdowns, combining for 24 of the 33 TDs in the passing game last season.

UTRGV recently added Ingleside receiver Jaydon Smith via the transfer portal, who is switching positions after playing safety in college at North Texas.
