It's a historic day in Brownsville as the community bands together to send the Veterans Memorial Chargers to the final four in the state playoffs.

Fans left early Friday morning to hit the road to Corpus Christi where the Chargers will face the Smithson Valley Rangers at Buccaneer Stadium.

“Now everyone's part of the family, even if you don't go to the school it's just like everyone's coming together,” Makayla Lerma, a senior at Brownsville Veterans Memorial, said.

It’s not just students and family members making the trip.

“I put in PTO,” Christina Martinez said., “I put in PTO for last week and for today, everyone already knew ‘there's another game, Christina’s not going to be here.’"

Christina Martinez and her husband, Christian, said they’re showing support for the Chargers who are inspiring their 8-year-old son — Antonio. The parents said Antonio wants to play high school football when he's older.

The family is just one of many at the game after Rosa Mares and her husband — Michael — were inspired to organize a caravan to bring the community together.

Members of the community can watch the game at a watch party in Brownsville, or at KRGV's website.
