Workers at La Reynera Bakery in Elsa spent the day kneading and mixing in preparation for one of their busiest days of the year.

“We start early in the morning, approximately three or four in the morning,” owner Gloria Orduno said on Monday.

The early hours and the hard work are all to make the Rosca de Reyes as part of Dia de Reyes, or Three Kings Day.

Many families in the Rio Grande Valley celebrate Three Kings Day. It honors the three wise men who gave gifts to Jesus after his birth.

The roscas are oval-shaped cakes and are topped off with candied fruit, and plastic babies are hidden inside.

The bakery, located at 121 N. Broadway Street, sold 500 roscas last year, Orduno said.

This year, Orduno said she's looking to sell even more.
