About 32,000 Edinburg CISD students are heading back to school, and the district says police will be out in full force as roads get busier.

Edinburg CISD Police Chief Ricardo Perez Jr. said between 9,000 and 10,000 of those students will be riding a school bus. The district expects 130 to 140 buses on the road.

It won't just be the district police department watching the roads. Chief Perez said multiple local and state law enforcement agencies are expected to help manage first-day traffic.

Officers are reminding drivers to slow down in school zones, stay off their phones, watch crosswalks, and never pass a school bus while students are loading or unloading.

"Our officers are very well trained; they've been training all summer,” Perez said. “So we want to make sure that our parents and our students are secured in knowing that they can come to a good learning environment, get a great education, and that they're safe while they're here.”

The district has armed officers assigned to all of its campuses. Chief Perez said the goal is to be prepared for all types of emergencies.

His message for drivers this morning is simple: leave early, put the phone down while driving, and slow down in school zones.
