City of Harlingen launches grant program to help small business impacted by flooding
It's not just home damage Rio Grande Valley residents are dealing with. Vehicles, farms, and other businesses also saw damage.
Many of the businesses are still working on these recovery efforts. The city of Harlingen has identified at least 70 small businesses that were impacted.
The city is trying to help small businesses, and that's why they started a program called the Business Recovery Grant Program.
The program will provide $3,000 grants to small businesses impacted by the recent flooding. The city was able to create this program because of funds that were already there through the Economic Development Corporation.
On Thursday night, during a commission meeting, the EDC and Harlingen City Commission approved to use those funds towards this new program.
Where before it was for revitalization efforts and a business had to match the grant amount, now businesses can qualify for the funds without having to match at all.
"Those funds are now going to be for recovery efforts to be able to maybe replace equipment, inventory damages to the building, anything that is going to assist small businesses to retain jobs inside their business and to keep their doors open," Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda.
The application is not yet open, but the EDC is hoping to get it up and running by next Wednesday.
