Cameron County election officials say poll worker initials on ballots will not void votes
Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza says a social media post has raised questions from voters by claiming a ballot will be disqualified if a poll worker writes on it.
Garza says the post has been circulating since 2020 and he wants voters to know initials on ballots are official and required.
“This Facebook post mentioning that the clerks would be putting on markings in hopes of disqualifying a ballot so that voters won't have their votes count causes concern with people unfamiliar with the ballot itself,” Garza said.
Garza showed Channel 5 News the social media post at the center of questions his office is getting. He said poll workers initial ballots to tie them to a voting location and to confirm the ballot came from his office.
“It's to tie the ballot to the location. It's to make sure any paper or any ballot that's introduced to our voting system originated with our office and not brought in by somebody else,” Garza said.
Outside the Brownsville Public Library, voters were still lining up to cast ballots ahead of election day. Early voting turnout in Cameron County is on track to surpass turnout from the 2022 midterm election.
“I do also think that voter fraud is something that a lot of people are very afraid of nowadays. So it feels a little bit fear-mongering,” Brownsville resident Luka Hernandez said.
Hernandez encourages voters to do their own research.
“There is a lot of stuff that you can't trust nowadays and so it is important to do our research and come up with our own conclusions,” Hernandez said.
The last day of early voting is Friday, Oct. 30.
