Cameron County and Starbase teaming up for dune restoration project
The city of Starbase will work with Cameron County to restore the sand dunes at Boca Chica Beach.
The dune restoration effort was spearheaded by Starbase, and the city secured the county's permission to move forward with its renourishment plan, Starbase announced on Tuesday.
“I think it's a great opportunity for both entities to be able to address an issue that has not been able to get addressed,” Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. said. “Sometimes when the tides in Boca Chica Beach are very, very narrow and sometimes not passable. These are things that we want to address."
The county's agreement comes with some restrictions.

Starbase won't be allowed to seek the same funding for the dune restoration effort. The city also won't be allowed to restrict public access to the beach.
“We want to make sure that we protect public access, we protect the infrastructure that's out there,” Treviño Jr. said.
The city verbally agreed to those terms during a recent Cameron County Commissioners Court meeting.
Treviño said Starbase will be responsible for improving the dunes that lie within the city's jurisdiction, and work with the county to improve the dunes in the county area.
“We're not handing over the beach, we're working with them to address that area that's within their city limits — and more importantly, they're working with us to address those areas outside the city limits,” Treviño Jr. said.
The section of Boca Chica Beach that falls under Starbase city limits is just over a mile long.
Starbase city leaders will approve the county's terms for the agreement at a meeting set for Thursday, Sept. 25.
