A McAllen woman is helping collect donations for earthquake victims in Colombia after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the Pereira region on Monday.

Martha Cornejo lives in McAllen but is originally from Pereira, Colombia. At least five members of her family are still there, and their home was damaged in the earthquake.

"Friends close to me lost everything; their homes collapsed. It really is quite devastating," Cornejo said.

Her family has been staying with friends and sending her videos of the destruction.

"In the videos they send me, it's terrible to see where you grew up — your childhood, everything in the neighborhood, schools, college, everything. Seeing them destroyed is just so painful," Cornejo said.

Martha's wife, Gracie Cornejo, is the business development center manager at Acura Rio Grande Valley. She organized a donation drive to get supplies to Colombia.

The dealership partnered with the organization GEM to ship the supplies. On Sunday, they will send the donations to Houston to fly to Colombia.

They are asking for hygiene products, sleeping bags, tents, blankets, backpacks, and nonperishable food. Gracie Cornejo said they also need water, baby items like diapers and formula, and hospital supplies like gloves, masks, and helmets for rescuers.

Items can be dropped off at the Acura Rio Grande Valley location at 201 E Expressway 83 in San Juan on Saturday, Aug. 15.

"I know this is not going to remove their pain, but we're trying to ease their burden," Gracie Cornejo said.

Martha Cornejo said every donation counts.

"It could mean feeding a child, a person, or a family for one night. Hey, it's not about giving them everything, but at least helping them in for a day or two," she said.
