'A heartbreaking loss': Investigation underway following deaths of 2 Weslaco firefighters
Weslaco, TX (KRGV) — The Weslaco Police Department confirmed two firefighters died in an off-duty incident Wednesday morning.
The Weslaco police and fire departments are actively investigating the deaths, a police spokesperson said.
Police confirmed that the deaths are linked to law enforcement activity spotted Wednesday at the 2500 block of Nellie Street in Weslaco.
The Weslaco Police Department said it is not releasing more details out of respect for the families and to protect the investigation.
During a press conference held on Wednesday afternoon, Weslaco Mayor Adrian Gonzalez noted that the deaths occurred on National First Responders Day.
"We would normally come together to thank the men and women who dedicate their lives to protect others. Instead, our community is facing a heartbreaking loss within our Weslaco Fire Department," Gonzalez said. "Two members will not be returning home to their families; that is a loss that is difficult to put into words."
Gonzalez said the city will stand with the fire department to support them to make sure they are not going through this tragedy alone.
"I ask our community to do the same," Gonzalez said.
