5's Fans for Friends: Salvation Army to hand out box fans Thursday
CHANNEL 5 NEWS is teaming up with Azteca Valle, H-E-B, and the Salvation Army to help keep those in need in our community cool during the summer.
As so many Valley residents don't have the luxury of air conditioning, one fan can be a lifesaver.
Captain Benjamin Deuel at the Salvation Army of Cameron County says his team is ready to help Cameron and Willacy County residents by giving out free box fans starting Thursday, July 22.
"If you need a fan or an AC, [there are] two things you can do. You can come into our facility, and we're open every day," Deuel said. "Walk in [and] talk to Connie. She's our social services coordinator, and she'll make sure your needs are met."
Hidalgo County residents battling the heat can head to the Salvation Army in McAllen, which plans to give away nearly 500 box fans to those in need.
"It's a lot of families that are low income that can't afford even a basic necessity such as a fan," Commanding Officer of McAllen Salvation Army Adolph Aguirre said. "They come asking for assistance here [from] us. We see families with children, families with elderly parents in the car, and all of them were just full of gratitude."
