Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — A Brownsville artist had her work featured in a London exhibition called Dreams Without Borders 2.

"It’s just my joy, my passion," Lee Ghilain said. "I’m 70 and kind of starting my whole art career again."

Ghilain's Cherokee heritage shapes her art and shows up in symbols inside her work.

“It was amazing; it was so inspiring, and we went gallery hopping all over London. It was wonderful,” Ghilain said.

Ghilain's success has not come without challenges; she has vision loss caused by macular degeneration.

“When I lost the vision in my central left eye, it just changed how I perceived things, and I went much more abstract, which I love. I guess it was always in my heart to do that,” Ghilain said.

Through it all, Ghilain's love for art and her community continues to show in every piece she creates.

“I grew up in Brownsville, love Brownsville. We had a very strong group because we were the last graduating class of Brownsville High School in 1974, and we’re all very connected still,” Ghilain said.
