Two students will soon experience the benefits of a sensory room at Vanguard Academy Rembrandt.

Linda Gomez says her two sons — who are incoming seventh graders with autism at the charter school — gave feedback on what they’d like to see in the room.

“My boys, they do have PTSD now, besides their autism and their ADH, [this] is going to help them regulate or self-regulate from whatever meltdown or situation that they might come into,” Gomez said.

Vanguard Superintendent Dr. Narciso Garcia the sensory room is a necessary addition to the school campus that was years in the making.

“We have gotten together with Mr. Flores, our special ed director, students, staff, parents, just to get it ready for the 2024-2025 school year,” Garcia said. “So we are now looking forward to the construction over these next few weeks."

Once completed, it will be the first Vanguard campus with a sensory room. Students in grades fifth through twelfth will use it.

Campus principal Dina Cano says the sensory room is a proud moment for her school.

Construction of the sensory room will cost between $20,000 and $25,000, and it’s being paid for with grants and state funds.
