SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – A local winter-Texan is concerned about beach erosion.

Patty Hutchings says she has seen the ocean waters come in much farther than in past years.

She says she hopes local leaders will take steps take steps to keep the beach from decaying.

"I can see the damage that the erosion is doing. It's concerning," says Hutchings.

KRGV’s Frank McCaffrey spoke to the City Shoreline Director Brandon Hill.

He says the white-sands portion of the beach reported five feet of erosion in the last year.

Hill says the city can get funding to investigate and halt erosion if a state committee designed to handle the Restore Act, and Texas Commission of Environmental Quality determines the issue needs funding.

He says TCEQ has a survey available online that South Padre island residents can fill out to provide advice on where the funding should go.
