WESLACO – Last week, more than 14 inches of rain fell in Willacy County, nearly a year after the great June floods of 2018.

Many families lost everything and others are still sifting through what’s left.

The Habitat for Humanity of the Rio Grande Valley executive director, Wayne Lowry, says last year is still on the minds of many.

There are still some homes under reconstruction from last year, but with the Heart of the Valley: A Helping Hand initiative more than 85 families got back on their feet.

Then after last week’s storm, the Valley is once again on the road to recovery.

“Our goal in long-term recovery is to help the families that are low-income or have some sort of disability or some reason they're not able to work on their own home,” explained Lowry.

Lowry says even you don’t meet the requirements to apply for Habitat for Humanity assistance to fill out a disaster survey anyway.

That way if other non-profits or FEMA come into the picture, that information is readily available.
