With Father’s Day falling on June 21, Consumer Reports shopping expert Samantha Gordon says shoppers can expect sales on giftable items for dads starting early in the month. Whether you’re looking for something big or small, there should be plenty of opportunities to save.

One classic Father’s Day gift is a cordless drill. Consumer Reports says a lightweight, battery-powered model is best for most people. And if Dad already owns battery-powered tools, it’s smart to stick with the same brand so the batteries can be used interchangeably across devices.

That same compatibility rule applies to smartwatches and fitness trackers. Choose one that works with Dad’s phone and has solid battery life. It also helps to think about how he’ll use it. For example, if he swims, look for a water-resistant model.

This year, shoppers may not have to wait until July for major Amazon discounts. Prime Day has traditionally been held in July, but Consumer Reports says it is happening earlier this year, giving consumers a chance to save sooner.

Some of the biggest Prime Day discounts are often on Amazon’s own products, including Ring doorbells, Fire TV Sticks, Kindles, and Echo smart speakers. If you’re shopping for a smart speaker, Consumer Reports recommends choosing one that works with the devices you already own. Sound quality is also important, especially if you plan to use it for music.

Prime Day is also known for deals on countertop kitchen appliances. If Dad is into smoothies—or milkshakes—you may be able to find a blender at a lower price. Consumer Reports says the best blenders should be easy to use and easy to clean.

And the savings may not stop with Father’s Day. Before the end of June, Consumer Reports says shoppers may also start seeing early Fourth of July sales on mattresses and large appliances.

With a little planning, June’s sales can be a good opportunity to celebrate Dad and save money at the same time.
