Cameron County rancher hopes for tax payment extension during pandemic

BROWNSVILLE – For nearly 40 years, a rancher has taught Rio Grande Valley children, hobbyists and even some local politicians the area’s time-honored tradition of riding a horse.

Fresh from taking top honors at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show, Tita Kretz hasn’t had time to celebrate her riders. She’s worried the countywide shelter-in-place order may cost her, her home for the last four decades.

Over the past few years, Tita Kretz fell behind on her tax payments. As horse boarding and lessons became more popular with time, newer businesses began to squeeze her out, causing her to make a choice – either feed the horses or pay the bill.

Kretz says its part of the business, but her problem isn’t with competition, it’s with the tax office.
