MCALLEN – Some of the migrants who cross into the U.S. are treated by the federal government in their processing centers; some are still sick when they’re released.

Local volunteer doctors and staff at the Hidalgo County Health Department are doing everything they can to help migrants when they leave federal custody.

“You can see 300 and 400 people confined in these small spaces. With one person that gets sick, everybody gets sick really quick,” says volunteer Ivan Diaz.

KRGV’s Angelo Vargas spoke with Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Chief Administrator Eddie Olivarez.

He says they’re seeing immigrants with flu-like symptoms at the respite center, but adds there hasn’t been any serious illness.

We’re told there aren’t any contagious outbreaks at the moment.
