Health officials say positive COVID-19 cases are on the rise in the Rio Grande Valley, and among them are some fully vaccinated people.

While top Valley health officials say they're not too concerned with the amount of fully vaccinated people testing positive for COVID-19, they say it is something to keep in mind, especially with a confirmation of the Delta variant.

Hidalgo County Health Authority Dr. Ivan Melendez says it's unusual for vaccinated people to end up in the hospital.

But as the pandemic takes on a new form in the Valley, regional doctors say people with chronic health conditions and those immunosuppressed make up most of those fully vaccinated yet still infected with COVID-19.

"If you look at the commonality in all these people that have turned positive that have been vaccinated," Melendez said. "These were the people that were vaccinated in December, January, and February. So we're already starting to see a link of those people when they were vaccinated.

With the recent confirmation of the COVID-19 Delta variant in the Valley, doctors recommend anyone with underlining health conditions, vaccinated or unvaccinated, to wear a mask and to prioritize social distancing.
