MCALLEN – A San Juan officer accused of a civil rights violation was granted bond.

Sergeant Juan Galindo plead not guilty in federal court Tuesday of the allegedly violation.

In the 2015 video obtained by CHANNEL 5 NEWS, a man is seen restrained in handcuffs and escorted by two officers to Galindo’s vehicle.

The government alleges the sergeant hit the arrested man with his knee in his groin area.

On Tuesday, the officer’s attorney, Rey Merino, says the video doesn’t clearly show where the man was hit.

Merino told the judge, at the time of the incident, Galindo was concerned about helping another officer nearby who had been hit.

Merino also reminded the judge, Galindo won his appeal to keep his job in arbitration.

As of Dec. 9, the sergeant was suspended without pay from the police department.

The judge issued him a $30,000 bond without a deposit required.

Galindo could be released under certain conditions within a day or two.

Jury selection is scheduled for February 24.
