HOUSTON (AP) - Officials have rejected a request for money to hire more prosecutors to investigate a deadly January drug raid that killed a couple and injured five Houston police officers.

Instead, Harris County commissioners suggested an independent probe may be needed.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office had asked for more than $1.7 million to hire more personnel. Prosecutors say they're needed as the investigation into the Jan. 28 raid has morphed into a probe of 14,000 cases handled by the Houston Police Department's narcotics division.

The raid came under scrutiny after allegations arose that an officer lied to obtain a search warrant.

In a statement, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said her office "remains dedicated to fully investigating" the raid.
