MCALLEN – A YouTube challenge put a damper on a nonprofit organization’s efforts to bring holiday cheer to children across the Rio Grande Valley.

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program provides assistance to families who may not be able to provide a gift for their children on Christmas Day.

“At 1 a.m. we had someone who gave a challenge to their brother on YouTube said if you'll jump on this Christmas tree, I’ll give you a thousand dollar bike. So they jumped on the tree,” explained Adolph Aguirre, a representative with Salvation Army.

This action ultimately damaged the $500 tree.
