RIO GRANDE CITY – A new law is in effect to strengthen emergency preparedness to protect children during school.

The office of the Governor Greg Abbott says the new bill will establish better threat assessment protocols.

The new law will remove the cap on the number of school marshals that may be appointed per campus.

Prior to the change, one school marshal was allowed per 200 students.

A Rio Grande Valley mom says she appreciates the thought, but government can only do so much to keep her kids safe.

Araceli Guerrero three children enrolled in Weslaco public schools.

She says she believes there are others who can make a difference in preventing gun violence.

"I think it's the parents' priority to check their backpacks, to check you know, the children; it's not so much the government."

We spoke to Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Vilma Garza.

She says schools all around the Valley will start putting the laws into effect this summer and some have already started
