Hidalgo County on Monday announced the launch of a new advertising campaign highlighting the lives lost to COVID-19 and warning people not to become complacent.

The advertising campaign focuses on two nurses who lost family members to the virus.

One nurse lost her mother, husband and aunt to the virus, according to a news release from Hidalgo County. The other nurse lost her mother and father.

The ads warn people: "Don't let it kill your holidays. Stay home. Stay safe."

Hidalgo County launched the advertising campaign on billboards in McAllen, Weslaco and Edinburg.

“The images of our own health care workers and neighbors present real life portraits of bereavement and despair,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said in the news release. “We want our community to know that this fatal disease is easily contractible through family members.”
