SEBASTIAN – The owner of a Willacy County eight-liner says he was given an ultimatum by someone pretending to be a law enforcement officer.

The eight-liner’s owner was approached by a man claiming to be a state trooper who said he had to pay him or be raided.

"He has claimed to have information about potential raids that were going to occur in the eight-liners here in Willacy County and for a nominal fee he would take them off the raid list," says Ernesto Garcia, Willacy County Sheriffs Major.

Matthew Crim was arrested, and charged with a third-degree felony for impersonating a public servant and given a $5,000 bond.

According to Major Garcia, Crim didn’t have a badge or weapon.

Willacy County resident, Ernesto Garcia, says he has lived in the area for 14 years and hasn’t heard anything like this before.

He says he’s worried because he doesn’t know how to tell the difference between a legitimate officer and an imposter.

"I mean I don't want to get stopped by a phony cop and get the little money I got taken away," says Garcia.

Major Garcia says that upon request, all their deputies will show their ID’s.
