MCALLEN – A jury heard the first witnesses from the defense in the trial of Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada who was indicted on health care fraud charges.

Rheumatoid arthritis is nuanced and not always an easy diagnosis, according to a rheumatologist who took the stand Tuesday.

The doctor reviewed thousands of records belonging to patients of Zamora-Quezada. The witness used a Power Point presentation to explain the disease. He showed the jury pictures of hands twisted by rheumatoid arthritis.

The witness said that’s why doctors usually act quickly and aggressively to prevent disability, increased mortality and other complications that come with the disease.

Jurors also heard testimony about the use of a drug used to treat cancer. Zamora-Quezada prescribed it to many patients.

The rheumatologist who spoke in court Tuesday said many doctors in this field consider the drug a “godsend” because in low doses it can help treat the disease. He did add t didn’t produce the same results for every patient.

The defense will continue its case Wednesday.
