EDINBURG – The Hidalgo County Health Department announced the number of cases of mumps has reached 39 confirmed cases.

Health and Human Services Director Eddie Olivarez reported some of the cases are related to the original outbreak.

“With the incubation period ranging from 14 to 24 days before symptoms appear, this increase was to be expected,” Olivarez said. “This can be considered the second wave.”

Olivarez warns people who have been vaccinated may still contract the virus, but will have milder symptoms.

Local parent, Lori De Santos, says she was horrified when she received an email from the Weslaco ISD saying the district was impacted by the mumps.

"It is concerning, you know I made sure that the kids in my son's class... I asked him how are your friends and if they have gotten their immunization," says De Santos.

Those who are not vaccinated are encouraged to see their doctor to receive the vaccine.

The county says if you suspect you have the mumps to be tested by a physician.
