MCALLEN – Broken trust and ineffective treatment was some of the testimony Thursday in the trial of a Rio Grande Valley doctor.

Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada and three others are accused in a health care fraud case.

Thursday’s testimony involved a teen diagnosed by the doctor. A second opinion found he did not actually have rheumatoid arthritis. The question became: was it a miracle or a misdiagnosis?

The mother of the teen took the stand talking about the diagnosis given to her, then, 13-year-old son. Four years later, the pain wasn’t improving under Zamora-Quezada’s care.

The teen went to another doctor. She ran tests and determined the teen did not have rheumatoid arthritis. That doctor also testified Thursday as an expert witness. She told the jury she would not have easily prescribed the teen with a drug considered a type of chemotherapy as he was under Zamora-Quezada.

Another patient also testified saying a visit complaining about knee pain turned into two and a half years of treatment she did not ultimately need.

In spite of the testimony offered, the government has a considerable responsibility. They must show these mistakes were knowingly and willfully done, not just routine misdiagnosis.

The trial continues Friday.
