MCALLEN – Money for federally funded school meal programs could be in jeopardy due to the government shutdown.

Lunch is provided to low-income students or all students, depending on the district.

KRGV’s John Paul Barajas spoke to McAllen Independent School District Communication Specialist Mark May.

May says the longer the shutdown continues, the more students’ free lunch is jeopardized.

"We have 31 schools, almost 23,000 students, and we serve about 6.9 million meals a year," he says.

Communications Director of the Texas Department of Agriculture Mark Loeffler explained every school that is part of the federally funded school meal programs will continue receiving meals through April 15.
