Federal workers at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport were treated to a free lunch.

Airport director Angel Ramos said that ever since the start of the government shutdown, business owners and other local groups reached out to offer support to the employees.

Ramos bought pizza for the employees on Thursday.

“Every time I see them wherever they're at. I thank them for still showing up to work, having a smile on their face and helping our community during this time,” Ramos said.

Ramos added that operations are returning to normal, and airlines are bringing back flights.

As of Friday, air traffic controllers have received 70% of their paychecks, but Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said they will get the rest of their back pay soon.
