A parent with children in the Donna Independent School District says officials need to be transparent over recent events in the district.

Lina Martinez’s concerns were expressed Thursday, the same day two Donna ISD students were charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Two other juveniles were arrested in connection to the incident that forced the district to shut down through Tuesday, May 31.

Martinez said as a result of the shutdown, she chose to keep her children home

“I wasn't gonna send him to school regardless because there's been a lot of threats,” Martinez said. “The minute you send them and then something happens, we just don't want to risk it.”

Martinez added she's disappointed to hear about the students’ involvement in criminal activity.

“This stuff could be prevented, but I think also it has to do with being watchful to our kids and paying attention to what they are doing on social media,” Martinez said. “It has a lot to do with parenting, I believe."

Donna ISD police Chief Don Crist said parents can expect a stronger police presence on campus.
