MCALLEN – The whole idea behind opening a new respite center in Downtown McAllen was to deal with the large number of migrants.

The location, the space, the equipment, all selected over months to handle the influx along the border.

Now, the number of volunteers is about the same as the number of immigrants.

Under the government’s Remain in Mexico rule, most migrants looking to cross the border into the U.S. are having to wait in Mexico for an answer.

Sister Norma Pimentel says volunteers who aren’t at the center will usually take food and water to the bridges for the people waiting.
