MISSION – The number of migrants are increasing at Catholic Charities and detention centers in the Rio Grande Valley.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spent an evening with local authorities to patrol one of the busiest areas along the border.

Just a handful of Border Patrol agents, organized underneath the Anzalduas Bridge, file paperwork on the remains of a group of more than 100 people.

Hidalgo County Constable Precinct 3 Office participates in a program to assist Border Patrol agents to watch the border.

Constable deputies are there under the Operation Stonegarden Program, which is federally-funded by the Department of Homeland Security.

It’s part of an effort to control the crowds in an area south of Mission.

Part of Constable Deputy Joel Contreras’ assignment is to ask every person he encounters where they’re from and their age.

As a way to calm border crossers’ nerves when he first comes across them, Contreras greets them by saying, “Welcome to the United States.”
