RIO GRANDE CITY - They are called 'The Revive Fort Ringgold' committee and their goal is to highlight the history of Rio Grande City's famous fort.

This month they came out in numbers to honor Starr County veterans and all those who have served.

They had a special moment to recognize a historic mural on the school's gymnasium.

From its rural beginnings, the mural tells the history of the city through the years, and into its modern time.

The mural started in 2005; it was drawn and hand painted by Alberto Barrera, a longtime Rio Grande City educator and artist.

Alberto Barrera died last year but the markers now tell his story and his family now sharing their own stories.

The Rio Grande City school district now owns the Ft. Ringgold Campus and has several schools there.

It's the work of 'Revive Ft. Ringgold' to revive an important part of the city's history, and in the process recognize a historic icon.
