BROWNSVILLE – After Monday’s fatal officer involved shooting in Brownsville, the Cameron County District Attorney is speaking out about similar situations.

Cameron County District Attorney, Luis Saenz, says cases like these don’t happen often.

He says nine times out of 10 an encounter with a peace officer will not end in any show of force.

"These incidents that you hear about that are tragic are when a police officer like any other citizen exercises his right to defend himself when he feels like his life is threatened,” says Saenz.

He says all law enforcement goes through extensive training to know if and when they need to use lethal force to end a threat.

Saenz says the Texas Rangers will take charge of these types of investigations and a grand jury will determine whether or not the shooting is justified.
