LOS FRESNOS – A first of its kind method is being used to protect the endangered ocelot.

Their genes are being stored to support their population.

With only about 80 left around Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge, or left in the entire state, biologists are concerned they need to support their reproduction.

Unlike the typical house cat that can reproduce kittens very quickly, ocelots tend to have one or two cubs every two years.

At the refuge, they have successfully used a method to store the genetic material from a male ocelot.
