WESLACO – The acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security sent a letter to the Speaker of the House highlighting the conditions and care of families in custody along the U.S. southern border.

The letter is in response to another letter Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent to Acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan earlier in the month.

McAleenan says the emergency funding Congress provided in late-June has helped improved conditions for migrant children.

The acting secretary explained since the beginning of the year, DHS has prepared more than “6 million meals, conducted 400,000 migrant heath interviews and completed more than 80,000 migrant medical assessments” for people in Customs and Border Protection custody.

In the letter, he states Border Patrol agents have taken in more than 21,000 sick or injured migrants to be transported and treated at nearby hospitals.

McAleenan mentions four new facilities which he claims have helped enhance the conditions for people in CBP custody, adding two more will be set up by the end of July.

The acting secretary is hoping to discuss further efforts the department can take to improve the ongoing humanitarian crisis along the border.
